The Chennai Port Authority has announced that it will play a pivotal role in achieving Tamil Nadu’s vision of a trillion-dollar economy.
Speaking to Port Wings, S.Kirupanandasamy, Traffic Manager, Chennai Port Authority, said, Chennai Port, the second oldest port in India, will participate in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways organized “India Maritime Week 2025,” a mega maritime conference to be held in Mumbai from October 27 to 31, and in this event, our port has planned to sign agreements for various maritime development projects, pertaining to Tamil Nadu.
It may be noted that over 100,000 representatives from more than 100 countries are expected to participate, with over 500 exhibition stalls set up. Approximately 200 globally renowned experts will deliver keynote addresses at the IMW 2025.
Tamil Nadu has historically been a leader in maritime trade, from the era of the Chola, Chera, and Pandya kings to the present day. The state takes pride in hosting three major ports—Chennai, Kamarajar (formerly Ennore Port), and V.O.Chidambaranar in Tuticorin.
S.Kirupanandasamy stated: “Over the past 147 years, Chennai Port has been a backbone of South India’s industrial growth and prosperity, while continuously implementing projects to support future development.”
Rs. 6,000 Crore Maduravoyal Elevated Corridor:
S.Kirupanandasamy said: “The long-pending Chennai Port-Maduravoyal elevated corridor project is progressing rapidly. Valued at approximately Rs. 6,000 crore, this double-decker elevated corridor will enable seamless 24/7 cargo transportation once operational. Additionally, a multi-modal logistics hub is being developed at Mapedu near Sriperumbudur through a joint venture involving Chennai Port, the National Highways Authority, Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, Indian Railways, and Reliance Industries. This hub will connect the ports of Chennai, Ennore, and Kattupalli via road and rail, revolutionizing cargo handling efficiency.”
“To meet the nation’s future growth demands, Chennai Port is continuously enhancing its infrastructure. To address long-standing container traffic congestion, a parking terminal capable of accommodating over 600 container trailers simultaneously has been established near the port’s main entrance. This has enabled the port to handle a record 6,570 cargo vehicles in a single day.”
“Additionally, a new open storage warehouse spanning approximately 100,000 square meters is under construction to increase storage capacity. Alongside the existing 60,000 square meter covered storage warehouse, an additional 20,000 square meter covered warehouse is being developed.”
Rs. 8,000 Crore Deep-Sea Port:
S.Kirupanandasamy said: “To enhance the port’s future capacity, plans are underway to construct a deep-sea port outside Chennai Port at an estimated cost of Rs. 8,000 crore. This project includes creating 96 hectares of artificial land, featuring a 2-kilometer cargo terminal and 4 kilometers of multi-cargo berths.”
“The new port will handle 50 million metric tonnes of cargo annually and cater to the needs of the Navy, marine research, coastal security vessels, and ship repair activities.”
Modern Technology:
S.Kirupanandasamy said: “Chennai Port is adopting cutting-edge technologies to align with modern demands. Through digitalization and artificial intelligence, the port has introduced automated entry gates, control rooms, enhanced security systems, and fifth-generation communication networks, providing added benefits to customers.”
“The port also plans to establish a solar power plant on approximately 1,200 acres of land to be acquired from the central government, generating 500 MW of electricity daily.”
Trillion-Dollar Economic Growth
S.Kirupanandasamy said: “Tamil Nadu has always been a pioneer in social, cultural, economic, and technological advancements. To achieve its Tamil Nadu Vision of a trillion-dollar economy by 2030, the state government is implementing ambitious plans. Chennai Port is contributing significantly to this goal by executing various infrastructure development projects worth thousands of crores.” “On 28 October, a special session on Tamil Nadu’s maritime projects will be held during the India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai. Chaired by Chennai Port Chairperson Sunil Paliwal, the session will include Tamil Nadu government secretaries, maritime board officials, and key stakeholders. New agreements for ports and shipbuilding facilities are expected to be signed. This is how Chennai Port is steadfastly supporting Tamil Nadu’s trillion-dollar economic vision.”
