Based on specific intelligence, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Chennai Customs on 18 September intercepted two passengers arrived from Bangkok by Thai Airways Flight TG 337.
In the first case, an Indian male passenger was found in possession of a blue trolley bag. After detailed examination, it revealed six transparent polythene packets containing green flowering/fruiting tops emitting strong odor concealed in the false bottom of the trolley. Field Drug Testing confirmed the substance to be Cannabis (Ganja/Marijuana) weighing 5.992 kg (net weight).
In the second case, a female passenger was carrying a similar trolley bag having six transparent polythene packets containing green flowering/fruiting tops emitting strong odor concealed in the false bottom. Field Drug Testing confirmed the substance as Cannabis (Ganja/Marijuana) weighing 6.000 kg (net weight).
Thus, a total of 11.992 kg of Ganja was seized in two separate but similar attempts of concealment by passengers on the same flight. The contraband, along with concealment materials were seized under the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985 read with Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962. Both passengers admitted that they had been recruited by handlers who had arranged their travel and promised monetary compensation for smuggling the narcotics into India. The passengers were arrested under the NDPS Act, 1985 and produced before the Alandur Court for Judicial Custody. This twin seizure underscores the heightened vigilance of AIU, Chennai Customs, and its commitment to curb narcotics smuggling through international airports in support of the Government of India’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.
