VOC Port Offers 10-Day Free Storage, Earmarks 40,000 sqm to Attract More Container Cargo

V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority has introduced a 10-day free storage period for laden export-import containers handled through Mainline Vessels and earmarked approximately 40,000 sq. m of additional space for container storage and stacking, as part of a move to facilitate and promote container traffic through the Port.
Approximately 20,000 sq. m has been earmarked at the 7th Berth and another 20,000 sq. m near the 10th Berth. The additional space is intended to support the storage and stacking requirements associated with container cargo moving through Mainline Services.
Under the new provision, eligible laden EXIM containers handled through Mainline Vessels will receive a free storage period of 10 days. Applicable storage charges will be levied thereafter in accordance with the prevailing Scale of Rates of V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority.
The facility will be available to Mainline Vessel Operators, Terminal Operators, Major Industries, Freight Forwarders, Customs Brokers, Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC) Operators and other eligible stakeholders, subject to applicable Port regulations, availability of space and operational convenience.
For the purpose of the provision, Mainline Vessels are those covered under Scheme 1, Scheme 2 and Scheme 2A, as specified in the Port’s Trade Notice dated 6 May 2026. The measure has come into effect immediately and will remain valid until 31 March 2027.
By combining additional stacking space with an extended free-storage window, VOC Port is seeking to make the movement of Mainline container cargo through the Port more operationally convenient for shipping lines, industries and logistics intermediaries. Trade stakeholders have been advised to refer to the Port’s Trade Notice dated 23 September 2026 for detailed applicability and conditions.
