Union Government Appoints Sunil Paliwal as Chairman of Inland Waterways Authority of India

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on 20 November approved a series of high-level appointments at Secretary-level positions, reshaping leadership across several crucial ministries and departments.

According to the release, Sunil Paliwal (IAS: 1993: Tamil Nadu cadre), currently the Chairperson of the Chennai Port Authority and Chairman of Kamarajar Port Limited, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). The report further stated that the post (IWAI Chairman) has been temporarily upgraded to the Secretary level to accommodate Paliwal’s appointment.

In Oct 2021, Sunil Paliwal, who was then serving as CMD of Kamarajar Port Limited,  appointed as the Chairperson of Chennai Port Authority.

Sunil Paliwal (IAS) profile

Paliwal is a 1993-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Tamil Nadu cadre. He is currently serving as Chairperson of Chennai Port Authority and Chairman of Kamarajar Port Limited. He has done his B Tech in Computer Science from IIT Kanpur, M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, USA and MBA from the University of Birmingham, UK.

Paliwal started his career as Sub Collector of the Collector of Tirunelveli, Theni and Kanniyakumari Districts. He also held crucial portfolios in the Government of Tamil Nadu such as Managing Director of Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Road Development Company Limited (TNRDC), Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), Secretary to Government, Commercial Taxes & Registration Department and Commissioner for Milk Production & Dairy Development and Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Ltd. (AAVIN), Principal Secretary to Government, Higher Education Department and Principal Secretary to Government, Labour & Employment Department.

Cochin Port Authority CVO Gets Extension

The Competent Authority has cleared the extension of Thillaivasan Prabhu (IOFS:2001), who serves as CVO of Cochin Port Authority (CoPA), Kochi, for another two years beyond December 25, 2025. His tenure will now continue from December 26, 2025 to December 25, 2027, or until further orders.

Similarly, the tenure of Ajay Madhukar Mhetre (ITS:1998), CVO of Western Coalfields Ltd. (WCL), Nagpur, has also been extended for two years beyond December 26, 2025. His extended term will be valid up to December 26, 2027, or until further orders.

Both officers were originally appointed as CVOs on the same day—November 25, 2022—for a three-year term. Prabhu assumed charge on December 25, 2022, while Mhetre took over on December 26, 2022.
