Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), one of the leading and major automobile manufacturers in India, renewed its agreement with Kamarajar Port (KPL) to use the Ro-Ro Terminal (General cargo berth) at KPL for another 10 years — from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2035, to export and import their automobiles, at concessional wharfage rate.
According to a media statement, the renewal agreement was signed in the presence of Sunil Paliwal, IAS, Chairman, Chennai Port Authority & Kamarajar Port, and Irene Cynthia, IAS, Managing Director, KPL on 31 July 2025.
Kamarajar Port, one of the corporate major ports under the Ministry of Shipping and strategically located in the fastest growing trade region in southern India, is well linked to the major hinterland industrial clusters such as Chennai, Bengaluru, Salem, Coimbatore, Hosur by State and National Highways, and rail link connectivity.
It may be noted that the General Cargo Berth at KPL can handle the world’s largest Car Carrier and has a backup area of about 3.70 lakh sq.m., with expansive car parking yard. It is the largest car parking yard in any Indian Port wherein about 25,000 cars can be parked at a time.
Since the commencement of exports in April 2012, TKM has been utilizing Kamarajar Port as its core logistics hub for international dispatches. Starting with the export of 247 units of the Toyota Etios series to South Africa, the company has steadily expanded its global reach with the support of KPL’s robust port infrastructure.
Over the years, this collaboration has enabled TKM to deliver high-quality vehicles to a growing number of international markets. Presently, TKM exports its Urban Cruiser Hyryder to 22 countries, including key markets such as South Africa, UAE, France, Egypt, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Till date, over 180,000 automobile units have been shipped through Kamarajar Port, underscoring the operational efficiency and trust built over the years. Spearheading remarkable growth in the global automobile industry, TKM is poised to export over 50,000 cars annually in the upcoming years through Kamarajar Port.
