Tamil Nadu Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa Urges Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal To Revive Buckingham Canal for Inland Water Transport

Industries Minister in Tamil Nadu State Government, TRB Rajaa, on 26 September 2025 urged the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal to unlock the true potential of Buckingham Canal for inland water trade movement.
Addressing the gathering of students during the 10th Convocation of Indian Maritime University (IMU) held at the IMU headquarters located in the outskirts of Chennai, TRB Rajaa said, “Dear Minister [Sonowal], there is one particular request from my Chief Minister M K Stalin. You have built one of the best facilities for your state Assam. You have done to Assam what you have always wanted to do. The inland waterways infrastructure you have built for Assam. This is a request from me and my Chief Minister that we should look at what can be done for unlocking Buckingham Canal [for trade movement]. It is 796 kilometer stretch of inland waterways. This comes right from Kakinada (in Andhra Pradesh), links Godavari River, Krishna River, and then comes to Chennai. and goes upto Marakanam (in Tamil Nadu). [There are] Huge possibilities, [there are] huge financial possibilities, and big big sector waiting to be unlocked. Its been 20-odd years since it was declared National Waterways IV, and we still waiting for something to happen there sir.”
TRB Rajaa stated: “So, I request the honourable Minister to look at the possibilities of opening up the amazing opportunities locked up in the Buckingham Canal. Please unlock that entire sector sir. In the 1950s, we did over a half a million tonnes of cargo through this waterway. Imagine what we can do now [if it still functioning]. Image the potential that is about to be unlocked right there.”
Making another request to the IMU management, TRB Rajaa urged the organizers to bring parents of degree-receiving students on the stage, so that they too feel elated over their ward’s academic achievements. Rajaa said, “I have a small request to the IMU management. In the following convocations, please bring the parents of these students on the stage too. As a country, a developing nation is being built by the parents at home.”
