Shipping Secretary Vijay Kumar Reviews Key Infrastructure, Operational Systems at Paradip Port

As part of his visit to major ports, Vijay Kumar, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, on 15 November visited Paradip Port, one of the fastest growing major ports under the administrative control of Union Government and located in Odisha.

During the visit, Vijay Kumar undertook a comprehensive review of major operational, marine and cargo-handling systems at Paradip Port Authority (PPA). He was received by senior officials and guided through several strategic locations that support core port activities.

The visit began at the Command Control Center at Gate No. 4, where the Secretary reviewed real-time vessel movement, marine safety monitoring, the Digital Access Control System and other digital platforms that enable smooth and efficient marine operations.

At the Wet Basin, he assessed berth readiness, vessel movement systems and key marine functions. P. L. Haranadh, Chairman, PPA, briefed him on ongoing initiatives aimed at strengthening efficiency, safety and future capacity development.

The Secretary then visited the Plant Monitoring Room of the Mechanised Coal Handling Plant (MCHP) to review the Rail Receival System and associated coal-handling operations. This was followed by a field inspection of the NIOB Wagon Tippler and the Stacker and Reclaimer system, where he assessed unloading efficiency, stacking performance and the capability of these mechanised systems to support high-volume cargo handling.

He also reviewed the automated Silo Loading System at KICT, which improves loading speed, ensures dust-free handling and supports faster cargo evacuation.

During a visit to a vessel at the Port, the Secretary reviewed iron ore loading operations, focusing on loading systems, safety practices and real-time coordination.

He inaugurated the Dust Suppression System at MCHP, further strengthening PPA’s commitment to safer and cleaner cargo management.

At the Administrative Building, he chaired a detailed Port Review Meeting with senior officers and stakeholders. Discussions covered operational performance, logistics improvement and strategies for sustainable maritime growth.

The Secretary also inaugurated two key facilities: the Integrated Gate No. 1 Complex and the SCADA system for Sub-Stations. These upgrades were launched in the presence of P. L. Haranadh, Chairman, PPA, and support improved security, smoother cargo movement and smarter power system management.

As part of the visit, the Secretary reviewed the Paradip Golf Course, where one hole has been newly integrated as part of efforts to promote sports, recreation and community welfare. The facility supports the well-being of seafarers and port personnel. A tree plantation drive was carried out at the Paradip Golf Course, adding to its green cover and supporting environmental improvement activities.
