PSA Chennai, officially known as Chennai International Terminals Private Limited (CITPL), one of the two modern deep-water container terminals located within Chennai Port, has handled a record-breaking 34,425 TEUs in one week, surpassing its previous weekly records.
According to PSA Chennai official, from a weekly average of 24,000 TEUs, our terminal has handled a record-breaking 34,425 TEUs last week, that’s a 45% surge over the facility’s designed capacity. “It’s a strong testament to the team’s agility and the terminal’s ability to flex capacity when our customers need us most,” PSA Chennai said in a social media post.
CITPL was awarded a build-operate-transfer (BOT) concession by Chennai Port Trust in 2007 as part of India’s port privatization efforts to boost container handling capacity amid rising trade volumes. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PSA International Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based global port operator founded in 1964 (originally as the Port of Singapore Authority).
PSA International manages over 70 terminals worldwide and has been active in India since 1998, with CITPL marking its second major investment after Tuticorin.
The terminal serves as a hub for containerized cargo from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry, supporting South India’s manufacturing and export boom in automobiles, textiles, and electronics.
It features RFID-enabled truck gates, container freight stations (CFS), scanning centers, and CISF security, with a focus on sustainability through CO2 emission reductions and energy-efficient practices. Achievements Over the Years Since inception, PSA Chennai has consistently demonstrated operational excellence, earning recognition for productivity, efficiency, and contributions to regional trade. Key milestones include rapid infrastructure scaling, record-breaking performances during challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, and multiple industry awards.
