In a significant step towards strengthening operational efficiency, improving port infrastructure and enhancing stakeholder coordination, Susanta Kumar Purohit, IRSEE, Chairperson, Paradip Port Authority (PPA), held a high-level interactive meeting with members of the Paradip Port Stevedores Association in the presence of Heads of Departments (HoDs).

The meeting focused on addressing operational challenges, accelerating cargo handling, upgrading infrastructure and fostering stronger collaboration between Paradip Port Authority and the Paradip Port Stevedores Association to support the port’s continued growth as a leading maritime hub on India’s East Coast.

Focus on Cargo Growth and Operational Excellence

Paradip Port has set an ambitious target of handling over 170 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo during FY 2026–27, building on its record performance of 156.45 MMT in FY 2025–26. Emphasising the need for sustained growth amid global economic uncertainties and regional competition, the Chairperson called for collective efforts by PPA officials and members of the Paradip Port Stevedores Association to enhance productivity, improve operational efficiency and strengthen the port’s competitive position.

Infrastructure Development and Improved Facilities

Addressing concerns raised by the Paradip Port Stevedores Association, the port administration highlighted several infrastructure improvement initiatives aimed at ensuring smoother cargo movement and better working conditions.

Key initiatives include:

Road and Surface Improvements: Upgradation of roads within and outside the port area, along with the development of suitable cargo-stacking spaces and improved paved surfaces to facilitate seamless transportation and minimise waterlogging. The proposed works have received approval from the Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) and Chief Engineer (CE).

Improved Drainage Infrastructure: Proposals for strengthening drainage systems to address waterlogging issues have been approved, with implementation to be taken up promptly.

Worker Welfare and Sanitation: Continuous efforts are being made to improve sanitation, hygiene and welfare facilities for workers and visitors across port premises and residential quarters.

Strengthening Stakeholder Partnerships and Mechanisation

The Chairperson underscored the importance of building a dynamic and inclusive port ecosystem that promotes mechanisation and modernisation while safeguarding the legitimate business interests of traditional stevedores.

The meeting emphasised effective coordination among Paradip Port Authority, PPP operators and members of the Paradip Port Stevedores Association to ensure smooth integration of operations, wider business opportunities and sustainable growth across the port’s cargo-handling ecosystem.

Collaborative Approach to Emerging Challenges

Highlighting the importance of a collaborative approach, the Chairperson stressed that the port administration and the Paradip Port Stevedores Association must work together to address operational issues, including dredging requirements, traffic management and other challenges affecting cargo movement.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of maintaining harmonious industrial relations, strengthening stakeholder responsiveness and supporting environmentally sustainable port operations, including initiatives in green energy.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to closer coordination between Paradip Port Authority and the Paradip Port Stevedores Association to improve cargo handling, enhance productivity, address infrastructure-related concerns and deliver better services to port users.

Through continued stakeholder engagement, constructive dialogue with the Paradip Port Stevedores Association and focused infrastructure development, Paradip Port Authority remains committed to achieving its cargo growth targets and reinforcing Paradip Port’s position as a major maritime gateway for the nation.
