Heralding the triumphant revival of full-scale container shipping operations after a seven-year hiatus, the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) on 20 November 2025 welcomed the container vessel MV SCI Mumbai as it gracefully docked at Berth No. 10.

The vessel’s maiden call, laden with 33 containers brimming with tiles, wheat, salt, and essential commodities while bringing 17 empty ones to load Goa’s exports, signals a new era of bustling trade and economic vitality for the historic Mormugao Port.

Dr. N. Vinodkumar, Chairperson, MPA, flagged off the much-awaited container movement. A ceremonial plaque was exchanged between Dr. Vinodkumar and Capt. Sathish Madhavan, Captain of MV SCI Mumbai, commemorating the vessel’s first call at Mormugao Port.

Vinaya Rao, Deputy Chairperson of MPA, and senior officials from MPA, Shipping Corporation of India, and Delta Ports Mormugao Terminal Pvt. Ltd., were present during the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Vinodkumar, Chairperson, MPA, termed it a “historic moment” for Mormugao Port.

He said that the revival of container shipping reflects the dedication of our stakeholders and the commitment of MPA to enhance Goa’s role in India’s maritime growth story. He urged industry partners to utilize the renewed facilities at the Mormugao Port Terminal to their fullest potential. He also expressed confidence that container shipping at Mormugao Port will soon reach new peaks.

The resumption of container cargo operation at the Mormugao Port terminal, being managed by the Delta Ports Mormugao Terminal Pvt. Ltd., was formally announced by the MPA during the Trade Meet held in Goa this August. The resumption of container operations signals the beginning of a new chapter in Goa’s maritime growth, strengthening trade flows, diversifying cargo movement, and enhancing the state’s role in India’s logistics and shipping network.

The revival of container operations at Mormugao Port is expected to re-establish Goa’s cargo connectivity with national and international trade routes. It will diversify cargo handling capabilities beyond traditional bulk commodities, and strengthen India’s maritime growth by positioning Mormugao Port as a hub for containerized trade in the western region.
