Port Wings News Network:
The government must come forward to shoulder the ailing textile industry by giving some concessions and other things, Justice R. Suresh Kumar, Judge in the Madras High Court, has said.
He was addressing the business session and awards function of the Tamil Chamber of Commerce held in Chennai, on 12 September 2025.
Justice R. Suresh Kumar stated: “In the readymade garment exports, Bangladesh has grown exponentially over the years and it is giving stiff competition to India. This is the trend going on globally that we must understand this. So, these kinds of industries we should not let it down. Textile industry people are saying that so much of loss is occurring in the business and many are winding up their business. The government must have a look over all these things; they must have a special vision to how to tackle the situation.”
Elaborating about the dire situation in Textile sector, Justice R. Suresh Kumar, said, “Getting more and more money for foreign (direct) investment is one thing. But keeping the already existing industries in Tamil Nadu, in India, alive and they must survive for which the government must come forward to shoulder the situation by giving some concessions and other things. Then only these kinds of industries can be saved.”
Speaking about the significance of sustained economy, Justice R. Suresh Kumar said, “Any country will survive until the country achieving a vibrant economy, no country can survive without (sustained economy). We are seeing many of the countries in the world are getting collapsed because of their financial position and fiscal deficit.”
Speaking about the GDP growth, Justice R. Suresh Kumar said, “Why the fiscal deficit comes, why the financial instability comes, because of the GDP growth. The GDP must be maintained steadily in any country, and then only the country can flourish. Turn to the area of GDP. If you look at the top 10 countries in the world, who registered the top GDP growth, India is the fifth country, you know well. As usual, the USA is the first country, next is China, then Japan, then Germany, and India. This was the position few months back. But the recent survey says India become fourth country in the Globe, surpassing Japan with $4.19 trillion as GDP.”
Speaking about the road ahead on GDP growth, Justice R. Suresh Kumar said, “Still, we have to go a long way. The reason being, the first country by the GDP wise, the USA achieved $30.5 trillion. Please see the huge gap between first country and the fourth country on GDP figures. Then you business people imagine how long we have to run, how much distance we have to cross. Therefore, the business must be flourished in this country. How the business can be flourished? We cannot simply say that the business people should start business, and you do the business, you contribute to the economical growth of the country. It is not possible. Unless and until the government comes forward, the governmental agencies come forward. The must give shoulder to the business community. That is the reason why the government many a times comes forward to give tax holidays. Tax holidays are provided. Tax reliefs are sometimes provided. These are all some of the measures being taken by the government and governmental agencies to uplift the business community to develop their business.” “But still, many a times, the industries are struggling like anything. We used to see on newspapers daily that industries are suffering. Government is also redressing issues. We cannot put blame on any government, be it state or centre. That is not our intention to put blame on any government. But at the same time, please see the position of Indian economy, also please see the position of Indian population, and also see the next important factor, the youth capacity in the country.”
