Kamarajar Port Handled 49.08 MMT of Cargo Through 1,008 Vessels in FY 2025–26: MD Irene Cynthia

Kamarajar Port Limited (KPL), a company of Chennai Port Authority under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour at the Port premises in Ennore.
The celebrations highlighted KPL’s continued contribution to nation-building through operational excellence, infrastructure development, capacity enhancement, sustainability, employee welfare and community engagement.
J. P. Irene Cynthia, IAS, Managing Director, Kamarajar Port Limited, hoisted the National Flag. While addressing the gathering, she highlighted the Port’s achievements during FY 2025–26 and its vision for the future.
The Managing Director reiterated KPL’s commitment to strengthening India’s maritime sector and contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat.
“49.08 million tonnes of cargo through 1,008 vessels”
During FY 2025–26, Kamarajar Port handled 49.08 million tonnes of cargo through 1,008 vessels. Container throughput reached 7,00,639 TEUs, while automobile handling increased to 1,91,825 units, registering a growth of 18.86 percent.
“Strong financial performance”
The Port also maintained strong financial performance, recording revenue of approximately ₹1,280 crore and a Profit Before Tax of approximately ₹924 crore during FY 2025–26. These achievements reflect KPL’s continued operational efficiency and its growing contribution to India’s maritime trade.
KPL has made significant progress in strengthening its cargo handling infrastructure and capacity. A major milestone during the year was the successful commissioning and operationalisation of Coal Berth 3 (CB-3).
With the commissioning of CB-3, the Port’s installed cargo handling capacity has increased from 58.44 MTPA to 67.44 MTPA, further strengthening KPL’s ability to handle the growing cargo requirements of the country.
The Port has also achieved a significant enhancement in its navigational capability with the completion of Capital Dredging Phase VI. The dredging works have enabled KPL to maintain an 18-metre draft, enhancing the Port’s capability to handle Cape-size vessels and further improving its competitiveness as a major maritime gateway.
Building on these achievements, KPL is progressing several major infrastructure and capacity enhancement projects.
With an additional 17.5 MTPA capacity expected to be added by the end of the current financial year, the Port is poised to achieve a total cargo handling capacity of approximately 85 MTPA. Major projects including the IOCL Captive Jetty, Coal Berth 4, expansion of the Container Terminal and other strategic capacity addition initiatives are being progressed to meet the growing requirements of Indian trade and strengthen the Port’s long-term growth potential.
The Independence Day celebrations also recognised and encouraged academic excellence and dedicated service. The Managing Director distributed cash awards to meritorious children of KPL employees, CISF personnel and Self-Help Group women for the academic year 2025–26, recognising their academic achievements and encouraging them to pursue higher education and excellence.
Certificates were also presented to CISF personnel recognised as ‘Best Performers’ for their dedicated service and contribution to the security and smooth functioning of the Port. The Managing Director appreciated the commitment and collective efforts of KPL employees and all stakeholders, including terminal operators, shipping lines, Customs, CISF, transporters and regulatory agencies, whose coordinated efforts contribute significantly to the efficient functioning and sustained growth of the Port.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives
KPL continues to place strong emphasis on community welfare and inclusive development. Since inception, the Port has invested over ₹100 crore in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives across key areas including education, healthcare, rural development, environmental sustainability and fishermen livelihood. These initiatives reflect KPL’s commitment to creating a positive and lasting impact on the communities surrounding the Port.
The 80th Independence Day celebrations reaffirmed Kamarajar Port Limited’s commitment to excellence, sustainability, inclusivity and nationbuilding. With continued investment in infrastructure, capacity enhancement, employee welfare and community development, KPL remains committed to contributing to India’s maritime growth and supporting the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
