Irene Cynthia Takes Additional Charge as Chairperson of Kamarajar Port Limited

J.P. Irene Cynthia, IAS., has assumed the additional charge of Chairperson, Kamarajar Port Limited (KPL), one of the corporate major ports under the administrative control of the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, with effective from 16 February, 2026.

It may be noted that Irene Cynthia has been holding the post of Managing Director of KPL since 21 August 2023.

Prior to taking charge as the Managing Director, KPL, she held the post of Director (Budget), Department of Finance in the State Government of Madhya Pradesh.

Irene Cynthia is a 2008 batch Madhya Pradesh Cadre IAS Officer.  She has done her MBA in Finance from Madras University and Micro Master Programme in Micro Economics from MIT, USA.

She was honoured with an Award in 2016 by the Madhya Pradesh State Election Commission for her outstanding work done for the conduct of elections to Urban Local Bodies in 2014-15. She also received Awards for Excellence in CM’s Udhyam Kranti Scheme for MSME units and Award for Excellence in e-Governance initiatives in the year 2015.

She is an accomplished bureaucrat. In a short time of her career in KPL, she has exposure to Port operations and Maritime sector. She has led the Port to reach its best performance in achieving the highest cargo throughput of 48.41 Million Tonnes in the year 2024-25.

Irene Cynthia has been instrumental for the financial growth of KPL with the increase in total income for FY 2023-24 from Rs.1081.43 Crore to Rs.1160.24 Crore for FY 2024-25, similarly the Profit Before Tax from Rs.766.59 Crore to Rs.837.54 Crore.

A visionary and energetic leader and she connects with the employees across levels and motivates them to excel through various initiatives. Irene Cynthia’s friendly, collaborative approach with Port Users and Stakeholders builds trust and transparency, which are essential for the long- term project success. 

KPL, formerly known as Ennore Port Limited, is owned by Chennai Port Authority. In March 2020, the Government of India sold its entire stake, approximately 67%, in KPL to Chennai Port Authority in a government-to-government transaction. Prior to this, Chennai Port Authority already held a minority stake of around 23%. This made KPL a 100% wholly owned subsidiary of Chennai Port Authority. KPL remains India’s only corporatized major port, operating as a company under the Companies Act, unlike other major ports governed as authorities. It is ultimately under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India.
