Independence Day Celebrations: Kamarajar Port to Supply 5 Lakh Litres of Drinking Water Daily to Villages Near Minjur

Kamarajar Port will provide approximately 5 lakh litres of drinking water daily free of cost to villages under the Kattupalli, Vallur, and Athipattu panchayats near Minjur through a seawater desalination plant being established by the port.

J.P. Irene Cynthia, Managing Director of Kamarajar Port, made this announcement during the 79th Independence Day celebration held on 15 August 2025 at the Kamarajar Port premises in Ennore.

Irene Cynthia hoisted the National Flag, and paid respects. She then reviewed the parade by the Central Industrial Security Force and presented certificates of appreciation and awards to outstanding port employees, port users, and self-help groups.

Speaking on the occasion, Irene Cynthia said:

“Established in 1999 under the Companies Act as the country’s 12th Major Port, Kamarajar Port has successfully completed 25 years and is progressing on a growth trajectory. In the last financial year, the port generated a total revenue of approximately ₹1,138 crore, a seven percent increase compared to the previous year. The net profit alone has exceeded ₹500 crore. The port had handled about 48.41 million tonnes of cargo last year.”

Irene Cynthia stated: “Through the private container terminal here, 6.81 lakh TEUs were handled last year. In 2025, Kamarajar Port received several national-level awards, including the Best Port Award from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, first place in the National Maritime Day celebrations, and the Social Responsibility Award from the Tiruvallur District Collector, among others. The port’s operations, valued at ₹25 crore, have been fully digitized.”

Irene Cynthia stated: “On behalf of Kamarajar Port, a seawater desalination plant is being constructed at a cost of ₹4.90 crore to benefit the villages around Ennore Kattupalli. This facility, which will soon become operational, will produce 10 lakh litres of purified drinking water daily. Out of this, 5 lakh litres will be supplied free of cost daily to villages under the Kattupalli, Vallur, and Athipattu panchayats near the port. The port administration will also provide infrastructure such as pipelines for transporting drinking water and overhead water storage tanks. Additionally, various skill development training programs are being offered at the port’s expense to provide employment opportunities for rural youth. Through this initiative, many youths from the region have secured jobs in various companies. Kamarajar Port not only contributes to the country’s economic growth but also focuses on the welfare of the people.”

The event was attended by General Managers Yatin Patel, Thirumurugan, Balan, Deputy General Manager Karuppaiya, and others.
