Chennai Port Crosses 50 Million Tonnes Cargo Handling Milestone in FY 2025–26, Records 7% Growth in Containers

Chennai Port has achieved the significant milestone of handling 50 Million Tonnes (MMT) of cargo on 12 February 2026 during the Financial Year 2025–26.
This milestone has been attained 18 days ahead of the previous financial year, in which the 50 MMT mark was reached on 01 March 2025. The early achievement underscores the Port’s enhanced operational efficiency, sustained growth trajectory, and strengthened customer confidence.
On the container front, Chennai Port has surpassed its previous year’s throughput of 1.56 Million TEUs by handling 1.67 Million TEUs upto 11 February 2026, registering 7.05% growth in container traffic.
The composition of the 50 MMT cargo handled during the current financial year is as follows:
Containers – 32.27 MMT,
Crude – 13.00 MMT,
Fertilizer – 0.358 MMT, and
Other Cargo – 4.36 MMT.
The achievement of handling over 50 MMT of cargo consecutively, despite strong competition from nearby major and private ports in the region, reflects Chennai Port’s operational excellence and the continued trust reposed by its customers and stakeholders.
This milestone further demonstrates the Port’s resilience, steady growth, and sustained commitment to maintaining high performance standards. Ongoing digitization initiatives and process rationalization measures under ONOPD have further enhanced transparency and ease of doing business for stakeholders.
