Chennai Customs Intercepts Contraband Smuggling Attempt at Chennai Airport

Acting on passenger profiling, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Chennai Customs intercepted a 48-year-old male Indian passenger arriving with wheelchair assistance from Kuala Lumpur at Chennai International Airport on 28 August, 2026.

The passenger attempted to pass through the Green Channel without making a declaration to Customs. Upon detailed examination of his checked-in luggage, officers discovered six transparent airtight packets containing high-grade hydroponically cultivated contraband ingeniously concealed within false bottoms.

The seized contraband weighed 2,960 grams (net weight) and tested positive using a narcotic detection kit. Chennai Customs confiscated the material under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The passenger was arrested under relevant provisions of the Act and remanded to judicial custody as further investigation continues.

Cautioning the public, particularly youth, against sponsored foreign trips and quick-money offers involving carrying unknown baggage, Chennai Customs warned that international smuggling syndicates actively exploit individuals to traffic contraband into India, leading to severe legal consequences and long-term penalties.
