Chennai Customs Foils Gold Smuggling Attempt at Airport

Chennai Customs officials have foiled gold smuggling attempt at Chennai Airport. Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Chennai Customs, acting on specific intelligence, intercepted an Indian male passenger who arrived at the Anna International Airport, Chennai from Singapore by Air India Flight No. AI 347 dated 01 March 2026.
Upon personal search of the passenger, two numbers of transparent plastic pouches wrapped in black colour adhesive tape containing gold paste were found. Upon extraction, 750 grams of 24-carat gold valued at Rs.1.14 Crore was recovered and the same has been seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
According to a media statement, the passenger involved in the smuggling attempt has been produced before the Judicial Magistrate of the Special Court for Customs for judicial custody and was remanded. Further investigation is underway. This seizure highlights the heightened vigilance of Chennai Customs, working relentlessly to curb smuggling through International Airports, protecting the economic frontiers of the nation.
