Chennai Customs Arrests 2 Airline Cleaning Staff for Smuggling Gold Worth Rs 2.37 Crore

Acting on specific intelligence, officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), Chennai Customs, intercepted two airline cleaning staff members assigned to an aircraft arriving from Dubai at Chennai International Airport on 30 August, 2026.
During a personal search, officers found a packet of yellow-colored paste wrapped in black adhesive tape ingeniously concealed inside the shoes of each staff member.
Upon further examination, melting, and processing, the recovered substance yielded 1,640 grams of gold in ingot form. A Government-approved Gold Assayer certified the ingots as 24-carat purity, valued at Rs. 2.37 crores.
The contraband was seized, and both individuals were arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, and subsequently remanded to judicial custody. Further investigations are currently in progress.
Chennai Customs strictly advises the public and airport personnel against smuggling gold or other contraband concealed on their person or within baggage. Such violations are serious offenses under the Customs Act, attracting strict punitive actions and severe long-term legal consequences.
