Demonstrating its capability to execute and manage complex marine infrastructure projects of national importance, Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL) on 24 June 2026 announced the successful completion of technically challenging Rock Dredging Project at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA).
Project Significance for JNPA
The project held significant strategic importance for JNPA as the rock dredging works had remained incomplete for a considerable period and were critical for achieving and maintaining the required navigational draft required for seamless port operations.
The successful completion of the project has enabled JNPA and its terminal operator to maintain the desired depth for vessel navigation, thereby enhancing operational efficiency, improving port productivity, and ensuring uninterrupted business activities.
Major Challenges Overcome
The project involved execution at an operational brownfield berth, requiring the berth to be taken over, worked upon, and handed back within a compressed timeframe. The assignment also involved dismantling and refitting of sixteen berth fenders, which added significant complexity to project execution.
Further, the work site was located adjacent to a liquid cargo berth and an active landing jetty, necessitating stringent safety measures and operational controls.
Since drilling and blasting operations were to be carried out in close proximity to existing marine structures, critical parameters such as vibration levels, shear forces, crack propagation, and structural responses had to be continuously monitored by independent technical agencies.
The blasting operations were restricted to daytime hours, reducing the available execution window by nearly fifty percent.
Considering the sensitivity of the operations, a comprehensive risk mitigation framework, including a ₹200 crore insurance cover for the adjoining jetty infrastructure, was implemented.
DCIL’s Strategic Approach
Recognizing that meticulous planning would be critical to the success of the project, DCIL placed significant emphasis on pre-execution studies, risk assessment, tender structuring, and stakeholder coordination.
To ensure the highest standards of safety and technical oversight, renowned institutions including Anna University, Chennai; the National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM), Bengaluru; and the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal were engaged for independent monitoring and validation throughout the project.
The dredging works were executed through specialized contractors under DCIL’s close supervision and project management framework. Through effective coordination among the dredging contractor, drilling and blasting contractor, technical institutions, and port stakeholders, the project was executed safely and successfully.
DCIL’s Technical Expertise
The successful completion of this project has established a benchmark for the execution of complex rock dredging works in India. The project demonstrates DCIL’s technical expertise, project management capabilities, and commitment to delivering challenging maritime infrastructure projects that support India’s port-led development and economic growth.
This achievement further reinforces DCIL’s position as the country’s premier dredging organization, capable of delivering highly specialized and technically demanding marine engineering solutions.
