Chennai Customs Seizes 2 kg Smuggled Gold From Two Myanmar Passengers at Airport

Based on standard procedure of passenger profiling at the airport, officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), Chennai Customs, intercepted two passengers, a female and an accompanying male, both Myanmarese nationals, arriving from Bangkok on 15 August, 2026.

Personal searches of both individuals led to the recovery of cut gold bars concealed within their bodies in solid masses and pellets wrapped in rubber pouches and adhesive tape.

The recovered gold, certified as 24-Karat gold weighing 1,967 grams (net weight), is valued at Rs. 2.65 crores. The contraband was seized, and both passengers were arrested under the Customs Act, 1962, and remanded to judicial custody, with further investigation underway.

Chennai Customs advises the public against carrying gold or contraband concealed in baggage or on person, reiterating that smuggling attempts carry severe legal consequences and strict punishment under the Customs Act.
