World Maritime University Holds Graduation Ceremonies of two Master of Science Programmes in Maritime Affairs Offered in China

On 22 and 24 July, the World Maritime University (WMU) celebrated the graduation ceremonies of the two Master of Science (MSc) in Maritime Affairs specializations offered in China.
Established in 2005, the International Transport and Logistics (ITL) specialization is delivered in Shanghai in partnership with Shanghai Maritime University (SMU), and the Maritime Safety and Environmental Management (MSEM) specialization is delivered in Dalian in cooperation with Dalian Maritime University (DMU). In total, 72 students were awarded MSc degrees.
WMU was represented at the ceremonies by Professor Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr., President, Professor Michael Ekow Manuel, Vice President (Provost), and Professor Dong Cheng, Head of the China-based specializations.
President Mejia delivered the commencement addresses at both ceremonies and extended congratulations on behalf of WMU to the graduates. He expressed appreciation to Shanghai Maritime University and Dalian Maritime University respectively for their long-term collaboration, upgrading of teaching facilities for the programmes, and full commitment to safeguarding educational quality.
In addition, President Mejia thanked the Maritime Safety Administration of the China Ministry of Transport for its continuous support to the programmes.
He highlighted that the China Programmes fully integrate WMU’s international mandate and global vision with Shanghai Maritime University’s regional strengths and local practical advantages, as well as Dalian Maritime University’s solid expertise in shipping practice and experience in China’s maritime governance, creating an international, high-standard educational offering for students.
ITL Class of 2026 Graduation, Shanghai
The graduation ceremony of the MSc in Maritime Affairs specialization in International Transport and Logistics (ITL) took place in Shanghai, China on 22 July with a total of 26 graduates.
Professor CHU Bei-Ping, President of Shanghai Maritime University (SMU), congratulated the graduates on their achievement. He noted that the shipping industry is currently undergoing a critical period of digital, intelligent, green and low-carbon transformation alongside the restructuring of global supply chains, which sets new requirements for high-calibre talent with an international perspective, professional competence and a strong sense of responsibility.
President Chu highlighted that leveraging WMU’s strengths in international education and the distinctive maritime disciplines of partner universities, the ITL specialization is characterized by the integration of global vision and practical orientation, and has cultivated numerous outstanding professionals active in shipping, logistics, ports and relevant institutions.
He encouraged graduates to maintain an enduring passion for learning, embrace innovation, shoulder responsibilities bravely, uphold accountability and integrity, and contribute to building a safer, greener, more resilient and inclusive shipping industry.
MAK Kin Yu received the Award for Academic Excellence. Other students received certificates and awards in recognition of their excellence in various aspects of the educational programme. Song Zhenchu made a speech on behalf of the graduating class. To date, there are 642 graduates from the ITL specialization.
MSEM Class of 2026 Graduation, Dalian
The graduation ceremony of WMU’s MSc in Maritime Affairs specialization in Maritime Safety and Environmental Management (MSEM) took place in Dalian, China on 24 July with a total of 46 graduates.
In his remarks, Professor Shan Hongjun, President of Dalian Maritime University (DMU), reflected on more than two decades of cooperative education under the MSEM Programme.
He spoke highly of the international platform for maritime talent development jointly established by the two universities, and expressed sincere gratitude to WMU and the Maritime Safety Administration of the China Ministry of Transport for their generous support for the programme development and talent cultivation over the years.
He stated that over the past 21 years, the programme has continuously supplied a large number of high-calibre talents equipped with both local governance experience and a global maritime perspective to China’s maritime authorities nationwide and the port and shipping sector, laying a solid talent foundation for China’s in-depth participation in global maritime governance.
He urged all graduates to keep pace with the trends of green, low-carbon, intelligent and digital transformation in shipping, pursue lifelong learning and continuously improve professional capabilities. Lin Xiaocao received the Award for Academic Excellence.
Other students received certificates and awards in recognition of their excellence in various aspects of the educational programme. Li Rui made a speech on behalf of the graduating class and Mr. Rong Yu on behalf of the Class of 2027. To date, 840 graduates have completed the MSEM programme.
