Fisheries College And Research Institute Organizes Coastal Cleanup to Mark World Environment Day

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 June to create awareness among the public and action for the protection of the environment. The theme of World Environment Day for the year 2026 is “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”

In this connection, Department of Aquatic Environment Management, Mariculture Research Farm Facility (MRFF), Tharuvaikulam and NSS unit of FC & RI, Thoothukudi jointly organized “Coastal Cleanup Programme” at Tharuvaikulam Fish Landing Centre, Thoothukudi on 5 June.

In this programme, Churchil, President, Tharuvaikulam country boat Association, Dr. P. Jawahar, Professor, Dr.D.Manimekalai, Assistant Professor and Head i/c, inaugurated the cleanup drive programme and highlighted the ways and needs to control plastic usage in day-to-day life and World Environment Day pledge was also observed. Faculties and 42 UG students from Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi and the fishermen were actively involved and collected plastic waste such as single use plastics, fishing nets, thermocol, bottles and other anthropogenic litters at Tharuvaikulam Fish Landing Centre, Thoothukudi.

Total of 300 kg of plastic wastes were properly segregated and disposed into dumping yard with the help of Thoothukudi City  Municipal Corporation for further process. The unwanted trees were also removed with the help of JCB in the landing centre.

A Tree Plantation Programme was also organized at Tharuvaikulam with the active participation of students and faculty members to promote environmental conservation, enhance green cover, and create awareness about the importance of trees in maintaining ecological balance.

An awareness programme on “Combating Plastic pollution” was also conducted to the fishermen at Mariculture  Research Farm Facility, Tharuvaikulam.

Dr. P. Jawahar, Professor, delivered a special lecture on “Marine Pollution control Measures” and highlighted the impact of plastic pollution in the marine ecosystem. Dr.D.Manimekalai, Assistant Professor and Head i/c., delivered the lecture on “Impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystem” and distributed the pamphlet to the fisherfolks to create the awareness.

Dr. P. Jawahar, Professor, Dr.D.Manimekalai, Assistant Professor and Head i/c., Dr.A.Juliet Selvarani, S. Sakthi, Assistant Professors of the Department of Aquatic Environment Management coordinated the programme.
