S. Viswanathan Assumes Additional Charge as Chennai Port Authority Chairperson

S. Viswanathan, IAS, who has been serving as Deputy Chairperson of Chennai Port Authority since April 2023, has taken over additional charge as Chairperson of Chennai Port Authority with effect from 01 December 2025.
Viswanathan assumed the additional charge following the departure of the incumbent Chairperson, Sunil Paliwal, IAS, who was appointed Chairman of the Inland Waterways Authority of India under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways a week ago. Mr Paliwal relinquished charge of the Chennai Port Authority Chairperson’s post on 30 November 2025.
Viswanathan is a Mechanical Engineering Graduate and an MBA in Marketing & Finance. He has also completed Micromasters Programme in Economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
As a dynamic IAS officer, he has taken various pioneering initiatives as Mission Director of National Health Mission in Madhya Pradesh.
His distinguishable service as Commissioner of Municipal Corporation, Guwahati, Managing Director at Tourism Department and as Chief Executive Officer of Ayushman Bharat has prominent impact on the society.
His unparalleled commitment and efficiency has earned him Chief Minister’s Award for excellence in Public Administration on two different occasions, which demonstrates his ethical administrative practices. Besides, Viswanathan is also the Managing Director of Maritime India Foundation, under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways.
