V.O. Chidambaranar Port has recorded remarkable growth in windmill blade handling. According to a media statement from the port authority, in July 2025 alone, the Port has handled 343 windmill blades, reflecting a remarkable 90.56% increase compared to the 180 blades handled in July 2024.
During the same month, the Port also facilitated the handling of eight windmill blade and accessory ships, registering a 100% growth over the four ships handled in July 2024.
Susanta Kumar Purohit, IRSEE, Chairperson, emphasized that this achievement further strengthens VOC Port’s position as the preferred hub for windmill blade exports among Indian Ports.
He also highlighted that the Port is developing a dedicated terminal exclusively for handling windmill blades and components.
Windmill blades are predominantly handled at Berth VOC-5, VOC-6 and VOC-3. To support such operations, the Port employs two crawler cranes and three harbour mobile cranes, enabling the safe and efficient handling of these oversized cargoes.
Facilitating the growing windmill blades handling, the Port has established a dedicated storage facility of about 1,00,000 square metres within the customs-notified area, along with an exclusive gate for their movement. This infrastructure ensures streamlined operations and secured accommodation of oversized cargo, thereby strengthening the renewable energy supply chain.
Port’s infrastructure further supports efficient handling through well-planned, congestion-free roads that allow the timely arrival of windmill blades. In addition, a skilled workforce ensures the safe and smooth loading of blades and accessories. These components, manufactured in Bengaluru, Trichy, and Chennai, are primarily exported to global destinations including the United States, Turkey, Australia, Spain, Finland, and other European nations.
