Govt Will Provide All Support To Sea Food Industry: Dr L Murugan

Dr L Murugan, Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India, on 21 August said that Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will provide all possible support to the sea food Industry in terms of policy interventions to ensure the growth of sea food exports in a sustained manner and take it to new heights.

Speaking at a meeting with Seafood Exporters Association in Chennai, he said, “We will leave no stone unturned to address the issues impacting the marine product exports.”

The Minister of State said fisheries sector in India has shown impressive growth with an average annual growth rate of 10.2% during the year from 2014-15 to 2018-19.

“The fish production in India stood at an all-time high of 141.56 lakh metric tons during 2019-20. Indian fish production is about 8% of global fish production and has second position in aquaculture production,” he added.

Stating that the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted seafood sector like many other sectors, he added that in spite of pandemic our marine products exports are showing recovery and expressed hope that this year “we will perform well”.

Listing out various initiatives taken by the government for the welfare of fishermen and fisheries industry, he said that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) at an investment of Rs 20050 crore.

At the event, the members of the Seafood Exporters Association of India expressed their concerns. The Minister said he would look into these concerns and find ways to redress them.

“Honourable Prime Minister is concerned about the issues concerning the fishermen, we are also planning to introduce the India Marine Fisheries Bill 2021. We will take up all these issues and I am sure the government will address the issues,” Dr L Murugan said.

Later, the Minister of State held a review meeting with officials of Fisheries department.
