AMET University Hosts Symposium on ‘Marine Traffic’

AMET University held their marine department symposium, ‘MARINE TRAFFIC’, on the 26 April, 2022. It was presided by the Chancellor Dr. J. Ramachandran and inaugurated by the Chief Guest of Honour, Dr. M. Ravi (IPS), Commissioner of Police, Tambaram.

The Chancellor gave a glowing description about chief guest mentioning how the commissioner was a humanitarian touch to the society. He also quoted that ‘A man’s achievement in life is the number of lives he has transformed’, and later mentioned an incident which had happened, where the Commissioner had caught some crooks and put them in jail but then rehabilitated their families. In the latter part of the speech, The Chancellor talked about AMET University, about how the staff and management had placed 40,000+ cadets on board, till date.

Moreover, he spoke about how the Danish Shipping Giant, Maersk wanted to have AMET as their Asian Unit and wanted to take cadets from AMET preferably before other colleges in India. He concluded his speech by quoting that ‘AMET will fly its flag high, out at sea and in India’.

The Chief Guest of Honour, Commissioner of Police, Dr. M. Ravi started his speech by talking about the main topic of the symposium and how technology can enhance shipping and reduce pollution. Furthermore, he spoke about how much AMET’s Guard of Honour, Parade and Drill enthralled him. He then proceeded to talk about maritime courses and said that it was one of the few fields where one can obtain placement into a company in the first year itself. He encouraged the audience to live by this motto ‘ Uphold the values and upload the values’. He spoke about the importance of emotional and financial intelligence, Inner strength, concept of morals, personality development, about leadership, friendship and most importantly about onshore and offshore discipline. He advised the cadets present to respect and worship their faculty and professors. Dr. Ravi concluded his speech by talking about the importance of The AMET Song, which when translated to English, enlightened us about the development of wisdom, knowledge and inner strength.

The event was also attended by Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Rajesh Ramachandran and Vice-Chancellor, Col. Dr. G. Thiruvasagam. The Vice-Chancellor spoke about The Chief Guest and how they had been acquaintances for about 3 decades. Spoke glowingly about The Commissioner and said that he was a model example for others. Col. Dr. G.  Thiruvasagam also said that he respected the commissioner’s honesty and integrity and vividly recalled some of the commissioner’s beloved speeches on motivation, education and skill development and even recommended everyone to read Dr. Ravi’s book, BE FIT, BE AWARE. The Vice-Chancellor then proceeded to talk about the role of technology in establishing greener shipping, enlightening the audience about alternative forms of ship fuel like LNG, LBG, methanol and hydrogen. The Vice-Chancellor stressed about the importance of his motto: “Understanding, Updating and Up scaling”. He finished his speech by talking about the recent honours obtained by AMET University, mainly, the recent ‘A’ grade obtained in The NAAC Evaluation and how AMET University had obtained the third rank out of 147 colleges around the world in the overall benchmarking by The International Association of Maritime Universities.
