V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) is consolidating its position as a renewable energy logistics hub, supported by sustained growth in the handling of wind turbine blades and the development of specialised infrastructure for large and over-dimensional clean-energy cargo.

During April-August 2026, VOC Port handled 2,188 wind turbine blades, compared with 1,254 blades during the corresponding period of FY 2025-26, registering year-on-year growth of 74.5%.

The number of vessels carrying wind turbine blade consignments also increased from 39 to 52 during the same period.

The latest performance builds on a sustained increase in wind-energy cargo handled at the Port. VOC Port handled 2,030 wind turbine blades in FY 2023-24, 2,635 blades in FY 2024-25 and a record 4,922 blades in FY 2025-26. The FY 2025-26 volume represented an increase of 86.8% over the previous financial year.

The growth reflects the Port’s increasing role in supporting the logistics requirements of India’s renewable-energy sector, particularly the movement of large wind-energy components that require specialised storage, handling infrastructure and operational expertise.

To support this cargo segment, VOC Port provides 1,00,000 square metres of exclusive open space outside the Customs-notified area and 1,44,000 square metres within the Customs-notified area for storage of wind turbine blades and associated components.

Berths 5, 6 and 7 additionally provide a combined paved area of approximately 1,00,000 square metres for cargo handling and storage. The Port has demonstrated its capability to handle wind turbine blades measuring up to 90.2 metres in length. Its operational ecosystem is supported by harbour mobile cranes, experienced manpower trained in handling over-dimensional cargo and efficient road connectivity between the Port and its hinterland.

Susanta Kumar Purohit, IRSEE, Chairperson, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, said: “The transition towards clean energy is creating a new class of logistics requirements for Indian ports. Renewable-energy projects increasingly depend upon the efficient movement of large and specialised components, and ports will have an important role in enabling this supply chain. VOC Port is steadily building the infrastructure, handling capability and connectivity required to serve this growing sector.”

“The sustained growth in wind turbine blade handling demonstrates both market confidence and our operational capability. Our effort is to strengthen VOC Port as a dependable logistics gateway for renewable-energy cargo, aligned with India’s Panchamrit commitments and the national clean-energy transition under the leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the continued guidance of the Hon’ble Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal.” he added.

As India expands its renewable-energy capacity, the logistics requirements associated with wind-energy equipment are expected to become increasingly complex, particularly as turbine components become larger. VOC Port’s combination of specialised cargohandling capability, dedicated storage areas and hinterland connectivity provides a strong foundation for supporting this evolving supply chain. The continued growth in wind turbine blade handling therefore represents more than an increase in cargo volumes. It reflects VOC Port’s consolidated role as an important logistics node in India’s broader renewable-energy ecosystem.
