NHAI Chennai Intensifies Drive against Unauthorized Parking on National Highways

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Project Implementation Unit (PIU), Chennai, has scaled up its drive against unauthorized parking and encroachments along highway margins to ensure road safety and maintain unhindered traffic flow.
As part of this targeted initiative, NHAI has identified and facilitated the removal of nearly 350 trucks, vans, and commercial vehicles parked unauthorized along national highway shoulders within its jurisdiction.
The inspections revealed that vehicles were illegally parked while drivers rested, visited roadside eateries, awaited loading/unloading, or waited out entry restriction hours into Chennai city enforced by traffic police.
The highest congestion was recorded along the Ennore-Manali Road Improvement Project (EMRIP) corridor, where 198 vehicles were identified and removed across locations including Manali, Elanthanoor, Edayanchavadi, Madhavaram, Mathur, Kosapur, Red Hills Toll Plaza, Tiruvottiyur, and Vadaperumbakkam. Additionally, 142 vehicles were cleared on NH-5 (including Nallur, Cholavaram, Panjetty, Sambilivaram, Peruvoyal, and Elaur), eight along NH-48, and four along the Chennai Port-Maduravoyal section.
To enforce strict compliance, NHAI PIU Chennai has formally alerted Regional Transport Officers (RTOs), local police, and district administrations, sharing vehicle details and photographic evidence to issue e-challans and initiate legal action under Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) norms.
NHAI reiterated that highway shoulders are designated strictly for emergency use and pledged continuous route patrol support to eliminate safety hazards caused by unauthorized roadside parking.
