Chennai Port Records Multiple Cargo Milestones, Launches HMCs to Enhance Cargo Handling Capabilities

Chennai Port Authority registered multiple milestones in bulk cargo handling on 30 July 2026, marking an increase in its cargo handling operations.
According to a media statement, the port handled 46,000 Metric Tonnes of Barytes exports in a single day through the vessel M.V. Nafisa Jahan at Jawahar Dock-II. This surpassed the previous record of 45,200 Metric Tonnes handled through M.V. Ghousta at Jawahar Dock-IV on 31 May 2022.
Additionally, the port handled 13,208 Metric Tonnes of Pig Iron, a new cargo commodity, via M.V. Agia Charis at Jawahar Dock-IV. The shipment availed the benefits under the Non-Containerised Cargo Concession Scheme 2026-27, an initiative by the Chennai Port Authority offering up to 80% wharfage concessions alongside loyalty bonus incentives to eligible trade partners.
To augment existing infrastructure, Sachin S. Kurve, IAS, Chairperson, Chennai Port Authority, inaugurated three Harbour Mobile Cranes deployed by M/s. B.L. Transport. Each crane possesses a lifting capacity of 100 Tonnes, a maximum outreach of 51 metres, tandem lifting capability up to 170 Tonnes.
Addressing the port officials, Sachin S. Kurve outlined the ongoing infrastructure updates and trade initiatives. With these additions and frameworks like NCCS 2026-27, Chennai Port Authority continues to expand its bulk, break bulk, project cargo, and container handling capabilities on the East Coast.
