To celebrate World Environment Day 2026, a major green initiative was launched on 5 June 2026 by Chennai Port Authority at the Babu Jagjivan Ram Sports Complex (Shri Babuji Stadium, managed by Chennai Port) in Tondiarpet.
Led by Chairperson Sachin Kurve and Deputy Chairperson S. Vishwanathan, the campaign forms a key part of the nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (One Tree in the Name of Mother) movement.
Speaking on the occasion, Kurve said: “To mark World Environment Day, Chennai Port is implementing the urban forest development project under the Union Government’s nationwide initiative ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (One Tree in the Name of Mother). As part of this, a major green project has been launched at the Tondiarpet Sports Ground. In this drive, every sapling is planted and maintained in honour of the participants’ mothers.”
He further said, “This connects environmental awareness with a deeply personal and emotional sentiment. This project is expected to significantly reduce the urban heat island effect in city areas. As part of this initiative, Chennai Port has planned to develop dense urban forests in the industrial-dominated North Chennai region within the next three years by planting and nurturing indigenous trees that grow easily in our local climate. As the first phase, the planting of approximately 1,500 indigenous saplings began today. This high-density methodology is expected to ensure rapid growth, allowing the area to transform into a self-sustaining, multi-layered urban forest within the next two to three years.”
Kurve added: “Apart from this, Chennai Port is implementing several projects to combat climate change. These include the use of green fuel vessels, wind and solar power generation, waste recycling, and continuous tree planting within the port premises to transform it into a green port. Through these efforts, Chennai Port is setting clear policies on climate change and functioning as a model port.”
