Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s largest container port, celebrated World Environment Day 2026 with great enthusiasm through a series of engaging activities aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.

This year’s theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” underscored the collective responsibility towards protecting and preserving the environment for future generations.

The celebrations commenced with the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, during which Gaurav Dayal, IAS, Chairperson, JNPA, Board Members, Heads of Departments (HoDs), and officials planted saplings as a tribute to mothers while reinforcing the importance of increasing green cover and nurturing nature.

An Environment Pledge was administered to all participants, reaffirming their commitment towards environmental conservation and sustainable living practices. To further spread awareness among employees and visitors, a street play highlighting the significance of environmental protection and responsible ecological practices was organized within the port premises.

Addressing JNPA employees on the occasion, Gaurav Dayal said, “World Environment Day serves as a reminder that environmental conservation is not merely an annual observance but a continuous responsibility. JNPA remains committed to fostering a culture of sustainability, environmental consciousness, and community participation. Every small action taken today contributes towards building a greener and more resilient future for generations to come.”

As part of the celebrations, an Eco Canvas Painting Workshop was conducted to encourage creative expression on environmental themes. The winners were felicitated by the Chairperson, JNPA, during a prize distribution ceremony.

Additionally, an Interactive Environment Day Quiz was launched on JNPA’s social media handle to engage the wider community and promote awareness about the World Environment Day.

Demonstrating its commitment to inclusivity and social responsibility, JNPA collaborated with Aai Day Care Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting special children. The initiative provided a platform for the children to participate in the celebrations and showcase their creativity, reinforcing the message that environmental responsibility is a collective endeavor that transcends all sections of society.

JNPA carries out extensive Green Port initiatives and an Environmental Action Plan. The port has undertaken several transformative environmental initiatives. These include the successful rejuvenation of four lakes within the port area, with work currently underway on two additional lakes, large-scale beautification and greening initiatives, development of green belts, conservation of ecologically sensitive mangrove areas and plantation of over 1.11 lakh trees through the Miyawaki method.

The port also has its in-house Environmental Laboratory, which continuously monitors critical environmental parameters including air quality, water quality and noise levels.

JNPA is making significant progress in renewable energy adoption, promoting sustainable logistics, implementing dust mitigation measures, reusing treated wastewater, building energy-efficient infrastructure, and supporting initiatives aligned with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ Maritime India Vision 2030 and Harit Sagar Green Port Guidelines.

JNPA is advancing green port operations with electric tugboats equipped with adequate battery capacity to achieve a 60-ton bollard pull. Shore power infrastructure is being developed at the existing tug jetty to support battery charging, with work orders placed and surveys completed. The port is set to receive and operationalise these e-tugs by March 2027.

JNPA is also actively enhancing its sustainability efforts by providing shore power supply to tugs and port crafts, resulting in an estimated CO2 savings of approximately 500 tons per year. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between GTI and JNPA with customised EPC GeM Bid floated to award tenders for a pilot project aimed at providing shore power to vessels.

The event witnessed the participation of JNPA Board Members, Heads of Departments, officials, employees, and representatives from various stakeholder groups, reflecting the organization’s collective commitment towards environmental sustainability.

As a responsible port authority, JNPA continues to integrate environmentally sustainable practices across its operations while actively promoting awareness and community engagement.
