Port Wings News Network:

V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, Tuticorin, on 15 December announced that the port has registered a landmark achievement — handling of 30 Million Metric Tonnes of cargo in the current financial year.

According to port officials, this milestone was reached on 14 December, seven days ahead of last year’s record, marking the fastest attainment to date. Steady progress was evidenced by 10 MMT on 26 June and 20 MMT on 21 September.

This is a significant achievement, considering the fact that the Port lost around 2.4 million tonnes of coal cargo this year due to a fire accident at TTPS power plant and reduction in capacity at the NTPL power plant towards the beginning of the current year.

During the current financial year up to 14 December 2025, the Port has handled 5,98,445 TEUs of containers, registering a growth of 8.57% over the 5,51,186 TEUs handled during the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

The major commodities that have contributed to this achievement include Limestone, Salt, Rock Phosphate, Sulphuric Acid, Edible oil, Liquid Ammonia and construction materials.

Susanta Kumar Purohit, IRSEE, Chairperson, stated that the expanding industrial base is expected to generate higher cargo volumes, further enhancing the Port’s traffic and trade prospects. He congratulated all stakeholders and trade partners for their continued support and valuable contributions toward this significant achievement.
