The 55th National Maritime Day was celebrated with fervor and enthusiasm 5th April 2018 at New Mangalore Port this year to mark the successful voyage of the Indian owned ship ‘S.S. Loyalty’, belonging to the erstwhile ‘Scindia Steam Navigation Company’, which set forth from Mumbai to London on 5th April 1919.
The main objective of the ‘National Maritime Day’ is to highlight the role of Indian shipping industry in the country’s development and recognize the valuable services rendered by seafarers, port entities and other marine establishments in the development and prosperity of our Nation.
The highlight of the multifarious week long events was the enthralling Sail Past ceremony held on 5th April witnessed by Chief Guest Shri Suresh P. Shirwadkar,Chairman i/c., NMPT. The day began with paying homage to the seamen who have lost their lives in the course of duty at sea.Following this, the privileged audience was witness to thrilling practical presentations on different type of perils encountered at sea and the subsequent daring and skillful contingency responses to tackle the emergencies and bring them under the command of Capt.S.R.Pattanayak, Dy.Conservator NMPT. The function was also attended by officials of NMPT, CISF, Customs, Coast Guard, MMD and Port users in large numbers.
