4 February 2019, is a glorious day for the Mormugao Port Trust when it hosted one the largest ocean cruise liner MS QUEEN MARY 2 on its maiden visit to Goa. The luxury cruise liner berthed in the early hours of the morning and the guests were cleared for landing as early as 06.15 a.m. The cruise liner is under the command of Capt. Christopher Wells and has arrived from Muscat, Oman. Having an LOA of 345.03 metres and draft of 10.3 metres, this is the largest cruise liner to ever visit Mormugao Port Trust. Goa is the only Port in India where the vessel is calling on this voyage.
The cruise liner has arrived with 2491 guests hailing from different nationalities viz., United Kingdom (1271), USA (283), Germany (280), Australia (230) Canada (112) and other nationalities, and has a compliment of 1259 crew on board.
Being the maiden visit of the luxury cruise liner, Shri G.P. Rai, Dy. Chairman of MPT along with Shri Vipin R. Menoth, Traffic Manager, Capt. Manoj Joshi, Dy. Conservator, Shri Jerome Clement Sr. Dy. Traffic Manager, Capt Arun Kumar, Harbour Master, Shri Mohan Kumar Secretary (i/c), and other senior officers of the port visited Capt. Christopher Wells on board the cruise liner and extended a warm welcome to the state.
The Traffic Manager Shri Vipin R. Menoth briefed the Captain and other officers on the cultural and historical importance of the state of Goa on the West Coast of India and its importance and status on the world tourism circuit. He also highlighted the importance of the Mormugao Port viz-a-viz the international cruise liner tourism and the role the port played during the pre-liberation era when Goa was under Portuguese rule.
Capt. Christopher Wells was very much impressed with the tiny State of Goa and looked forward to visit some important places during his short stay in Goa. He made a special mention about Old Goa and the heritage monuments of tourists interest there. He was all praise for the Port Authorities for the smooth berthing of the huge cruise ship on schedule and the all the technical support provided by the Port Marine Officers in docking the liner safely. The Captain said ‘knowing fully well that the cruise liner is accommodated at the commercial cargo berth, yet the peer is so clean and well maintained to welcome foreign guests’. He however advised that, in future the documentation process should be more flexible and simplified so that the guests do not have to spend more time through paper work on landing .
Captain Wells was also all praise for the Shipping Agents M/s. J.M. Baxi & Co., and complemented the tour operator M/s. Travel Smith Adventure Pvt Ltd., for their logistical support for smooth transition of guests promptly for local sight-seeing without any delay.
Sri G. P. Rai Dy. Chairman and Capt. Christopher Wells exchanged commemorative plaques as a token of goodwill on the liners maiden visit to Mormugao port. Capt. Sushil Mathur also presented a plaque to Capt Wells, on on behalf of his Company. Shri Govind Pernulkar of M/s. J. M. Baxi & Co was present during the brief ceremony. The travel arrangements for local sight-seeing were handled by M/s. Travel Smith, Goa.
