International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 every year. It is a focal point the movement for women’s rights. While the first observance of a Women’s Day was held on February 28, 1909 in New York, March 8 was suggested by the 1910 International Socialist Woman’s Conference to become an “International Woman’s Day.” After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.
KAMARAJAR PORT LIMITED
As part of International Women’s Day celebration at Kamarajar Port Limited (KPL), country’s only corporate major port under the administrative control of Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, and located in Tamil Nadu state, various competitions were conducted for the women employees.
According to a media statement from the KPL authorities, debate was conducted to the employees of KPL and Self Help Group women deployed at KPL. Shri Sanjay Kumar, General Manager (CS & BD) and Shri V. Krishnasamy, General Manager (Operations) presided over the occasion and made the day special and memorable for the women employees.
JAWAHARLAL NEHRU PORT TRUST
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, a special edition of Bhandarkar Shipping News was launched by Shri Neeraj Bansal, Chairman -in-charge, JNPT in the presence of guests from WISTA. Later, an interactive session on work-life balance by Mrs. Parnita Rasal conducted at the port and the women employees participated in it.
CHENNAI PORT TRUST
Chennai Port Trust Women Employees Welfare Association celebrated the International Women’s Day on 08.03.2018 at Chennai Port Trust premises. Dr. S. Sathya Raveendran CMO (CGHS), Chief Guest of the function, addressed the gathering.
Followed by, Shri P. Raveendran, IRTS, Chairman, Chennai Port Trust, Smt. G. Chamki Raj, Advocate High Court of Madras and Smt. P. Suganthi, Secretary, All India Democratic Women’s Association, Tamilnadu delivered the Special Address.Prior to the above, in the morning session, various Cultural Programmes including Pattimandram (Debate) was held.
The Officers and Staff of Chennai Port Trust participated in the function. Function concluded with Prize Distribution and National Anthem.
COCHIN PORT TRUST
As part of the function, Cochin Port Trust celebrated the women empowerment. In a message in micro blogging site Twitter, Cochin Port posted images of Sreelatha N and Jayasree C. B., Jr. Engineers, have been working onboard the dredger of Cochin Port Trust for the last 24yrs and 18yrs respectively with a message “Saluting our women members of the crew of Cochin Port’s Dredger-Nehru Shatabdi on International Women’s Day.”
KOLKATA PORT TRUST
Kolkata Port & Dock Workers Training Institute celebrated the International Women’s Day 2018 by holding a training programme exclusively for women employees, on laws related to women and health & hygiene issues of women.
