Port Wings News Network:
While expressing his concern on the continuous transport strike at Chennai Port which crossed 4th day, Israr Ahmed, Regional Chairman (SR), FIEO, said that it is seriously affecting exports especially in a time when exporters are struggling to gain business.
Commenting on the demand of transporters for 15% increase in transportation charges per container for short trip of port to CFS, he said that at present the trade is paying higher charges compared to all other places in India which work out to around Rs 390 per/Km. Presently Rs.3150 being charged per trailer to movement for a distance of 8 kms, he said.
Mr Israr stated: “While industry is struggling to become competitive due to higher logistics and transaction costs, this kind of demands and frequent disruption will not only effect the export and manufacturing of the region but also give a wrong signal to the investors who are weighing investment in India and Other south Eastern countries.”
“Unless the State Government intervenes in this urgently, the state will lose lot of emerging opportunities, which are expected to come due to trade war,” FIEO regional chairman said.
