Based on specific intelligence, Special Investigation and Intelligence Branch (SIIB) of Chennai Customs, Sea Port, had recently intercepted a consignment of 24000 numbers of internet protocol television set top boxes (IPTV Set Top Boxes) imported from China by a Hyderabad based Company namely – M/s Tera Software Limited for supplying to Andhra Pradesh Government’s pet project namely “AP Fiber.”
A media statement from the Customs stated that on investigation , it was found that the said importer sought to circumvent BIS (Bureau of Indian Standard) Certification Requirement for their imported goods by mis-declaring them as Android Box for gaining internet access and claiming that their imported goods did not fall under the purview of BIS.
The matter was taken up with BIS authorities. Under the Mandatory BIS Certification Scheme, the Licensed foreign manufacturer shall manufacture equipments in accordance with Indian Standard. One of such equipment is Set Top Box, which should comply with Indian Standard IS 13252 (Part-1): 2010 for Safety Requirement. They confirmed that the standard-1S 13252 (Part I): 2010 which defines safety requirements of various IT equipments including all types of Set Top Boxes (STB) is applicable to the imported goods under reference.
As the imposed IP Set Top Boxes are found not complied with Mandatory BIS Certification Requirement for IS 13252 ( Part-I): 2010, the consignment valued at Rs 1.48 croce has been seized by Customs under the provisions of the Customs Act,I962. Further investigation was on, the release added.
